The Caregiver’s Voice had the pleasure of interviewing UK-based Norman (“Norrms”) Mc Namara for this month’s VOICES with Dementia column. Diagnosed nearly 10 years ago with dementia and treated for Alzheimer’s with near-fatal results, Norrms was later diagnosed with Lewy body dementia.
He has since mobilized his vision through partnerships with others worldwide – from the Purple Angel movement, which now includes the annual World Rocks Against Dementia (WRAD). He credits the RAD idea to Wayne Mesker of Alive Inside [TCV Update 6/27/2022 URL no longer available], who began Rock Against Dementia in the U.S.
Norrms’ ongoing advocacy with partners around the world, and Jane Moore’s recognizable logo, even the Prime Ministers of England have taken notice of the Purple Angel’s efforts on behalf of the millions worldwide who live with dementia.
One man’s vision has rippled around the world. One man – driven by a singular purpose – continues the fight. He refuses to give into dementia’s symptoms of hallucinations, night terrors, and more.
Watch the 28-minute interview, which covers his diagnosis starting with heart failure, then the near-fatal treatment for Alzheimer’s before being diagnosed with Lewy body dementia. You’ll also learn the surprising answers to: Why does Norman abbreviate his name and spell it with two Rs? More importantly, listen to his heartfelt and encouraging advice for caregivers (carers / care partners), his advice for people living with dementia, and his final words of hope.

We could all use a bit of hope in the fight against dementia, these days, thanks to one Lewy body soldier who has mobilized the troops worldwide.
