This edition of The Caregiver’s Voice VIDEO features the UK-based Singing for the Brain music program for people with dementia, runner and movie producer, Suzy Bishop, whose active life slowed down prematurely due to younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease, and in case you missed it, CBS Medical Correspondent, Dr. Jon LaPook’s segment covering the effects of Alzheimer’s on a couple over ten years.
UK-based Singing for the Brain has been helping people with dementia.
Choir Leader, Peter Edwards, at UK-based Singing for the Brain, says, “… people come back to life. There is a great raising of self-esteem.” Sally Bowell of the International Longevity Centre adds, “We’ve all been hearing [that] we want to decrease the use of anti-psychotic medication… music provides a really fantastic alternative… Even if [a person with dementia] cannot communicate with you anymore” if you can find the music they listened to from 10 to 30 years of age, it can benefit them.

Suzy Bishop’s Story
Wife, Mother, Sister, Athlete, Entertainer, and Movie Producer, Suzy Bishop’s story is told by friend and co-producer, Jeanette Pavini. Little did they know their last project would be about one of them.
Even though her once-nimble mind forgot details, doctors refused to diagnose her with dementia. She was young, healthy, a runner, and ate wholesome foods. Ultimately, she was given the diagnosis of younger-onset dementia while in her early fifties.
My mind is not as quick and it’s so frustrating because I know who I was and I’m not able to accomplish what I used to. [Alzheimer’s] kinda eased in and I could manage it, but after that it seemed to be bumpy.
