Prayers and divine guidance lead two sisters on a path to move Mom from her own home in Texas into a California assisted living community and then into a home where they all live together with the help of in-home care.
Susan and her sister, Claire face many challenges, one of which is their mom won’t eat. The chocolate she craves and enjoys does little to prevent all the weight she’s lost. Also, she doesn’t remember milestone events in her life. Susan writes, “I [see] now it wasn’t that she wouldn’t take care of herself. She couldn’t take care of herself.”
While Claire lives in California; author Susan lives in New Jersey, and their mom, in Texas. Claire takes her mom (Ginny) to the neurologist and the diagnosis is dementia. The doctor recommends Ginny move into assisted living.
Susan comes out to help with the move. The sisters are surprised to discover that even the high-end assisted living community ignored their mom’s requests for help using the call button.
Each of the chapters in Bringing Mom Home are a few pages and make for fast reading.
When unsure, the sisters pray for guidance. Raised with a strong Christian faith, they rely on answers from above, even for life’s big questions. The answers are not always easy. Susan relocated 3,000 miles away from her children and grandchildren. Claire and her husband, Arthur, and Susan bought a large enough house to live in together so they could care for their mom at home.
A lovely book for caregivers needing inspiration through the challenging times. Even when the joys are swept aside and reality demands diving into the hard work, the sisters’ faith helps them care for their mom until the end.
