Two former family caregivers planned to visit the San Diego Zoo. Then COVID-19 caused the closure of venues where people would gather at unsafe distances.
Loraine Yates and I met online in the late 1990s, while caring for our parents. She cared for her mom and I, for my father. Both parents were diagnosed with dementia.
Despite our planned “girls time out” for a little FUN, we are flexible. Fortunately, so is the San Diego Zoo. The team at the zoo is creative and resourceful enough to offer fans a selection of live cameras to view animals in action. Of course, there are also animals in a state of inaction, such as the sleeping koalas (they’re soooo cute) and those stealthy tigers. (I’ve yet to see one.)
Giraffes, rhinos, and more! Enjoy this live view of the African Plains habitat from the Kijamii Overlook at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park .

Choose your favorite, from apes, elephants, and hippos to giraffes, koalas, and condors.
Enjoy a little caregiver respite. Then share with your care recipient!
The San Diego Zoo is located on 100 acres in Balboa Park, San Diego, California where more than 3,500 animals of more than 650 species and subspecies call home. [7/18/2024 TCV Update: Kane Rosario, Asst. Outreach Manager World Animal Foundation contacted us recently to update the numbers we posted over four years ago. We are confirming with his team first prior to updating our figures.]
