Times have changed! As a tail-end Boomer, I remember using or visiting a number of these images you’ll see in the video, below. Some brought back smiles like Woolworth’s where I would buy candy raisins. Others, like the industrial-sized equipment at the dentist’s office, make me thankful for today’s dental care.
Sadly, we’ve lost personal service like we had years ago. Remember full-service gas stations with attendants who cleaned your windows, checked your oil and tire pressure, while filling your car with gas? How about doctors making house calls? Does the Good Humor man even come around, anymore?
Today, when we make a special request, we hear, “We don’t do it that way.” “Our policy is ______.”
What a rare find when one responds, “For you, it would be my pleasure.”
How many of these do you remember? How many of these did you use or visit?
If you’re caring for an elder, sit down with your care recipient and watch the images in this nearly six-minute video. Make it a real adventure and invite a younger person, too. Pause to hear your elder share memories of times gone by. What a wonderful gift – your time – for someone.
These six-minutes may end up being a memorable half-hour of your life!
If you’re in charge of activities at a care home, share this with people with dementia. You may be surprised at their reminiscing.
Remember the scent of the purple ink of a freshly run-off mimeographed page?
In the river of life, there are few things we can (and should) hang onto. However, no one can take our memories. Well, except for one unwelcome visitor – Alzheimer’s.
